PROJECTS
As scenographers
for the theatre we were used to concentrating design and realization
in a single workspace; the scenery was created and then set
on stage. It seemed natural to us to continue working this
way also as interior designers; the set for our decor becomes
a highly imaginative location which we realize by giving great
care to richness of detail and harmony. Painting, sculpture,
stuccos, and the choice of wood, marble, fabrics, and paper
all contribute to and are fundamental in the creation of these
imaginary locations. When decoration is in harmony with architecture
it can correct imperfections and highlight architectural design
by creating imaginary and pleasant illusions. Paolo Larici
and Elena Palossi work in the same way as scene designers
do for the theatre when they design and realize sets: technical
drawings are supported by a colour scale drawing or card maquettes
in which the work appears studied in its entirety; pictorial
decorations are realized on handmade canvas, just like at
the theatre. In the studio the canvas is stretched, squared
off, and put in an upright position before any drawing or
painting takes place. Paolo and Elena use special brushes
with a long handgrip so that they can stand as they paint
rather than bend over the canvas. The canvas is often very
large and it is essential that it be in an upright position
to allow the scene designer to move about frequently giving
for him a better picture of the work as a whole. Once the
work is finished the canvas is glued to the wall or ceiling
as if it were wallpaper, with the added advantage of being
easily transferred and applied elsewhere if necessary.
